The implications of a Texas speeding citation

On Behalf of | Jun 26, 2022 | Speeding Ticket |

It’s not uncommon for Texas drivers who are in a hurry to “put the pedal to the metal” and travel at a speed that exceeds a posted limit in the area. You may have done this at some point in life, perhaps, if you were late for an important meeting or for work. It is never okay to disregard traffic laws. However, it’s not unusual for a driver to get an occasional speeding ticket.

The implications of a speeding ticket vary and depend on the details of your unique circumstances. For a minor offense, you might be able to dismiss the ticket by taking a defensive driving course. Certain restrictions apply, however, and you must be eligible to dismiss your ticket in this way.

What types of issues constitute ineligibility for dismissing a speeding ticket

Texas law allows you to dismiss a speeding ticket by taking a defensive driving class once every 12 months, if you’re eligible. The issues included in the following list typically cause ineligibility:

  • You received a speeding ticket in a commercial vehicle.
  • Your ticket states that you were traveling 25 miles per hour or more over the posted limit.
  • A patrol officer cited you for passing a school bus.
  • The speeding violation in question occurred in a construction zone.
  • You left the scene of an accident or were cited in connection with a hit and run.
  • You’re already taking a defensive driving course for another violation.

Once you complete a defensive driving course, you must turn your completion certificate in to the court. The court then informs the Texas Department of Public Safety. If you’ve met all requirements, your completion will be posted on your driving record.

Defensive driving course to dismiss a speeding ticket can be taken online

One of the benefits of taking a defensive driving course to dismiss a Texas speeding ticket is that you don’t have to appear in person to attend the class. You can usually complete such courses online.

Additional implications for speeding tickets often include increased auto insurance rates, substantial fines and possible driver’s license suspension. A suspended license can have a ripple effect of negative issues in your life. For instance, if you can’t drive, you might not be able to get to and from work, which could cost you your job.  If you’re unsure what to do after getting a speeding ticket, it’s a good idea to seek legal support from someone who is well-versed in Texas traffic laws.
